Lemon Chitranna (Rice)

A typical puja day recipe or a light lunch meal. Pairs well with yogurt or raita.

  • Pan
  • Rice Cooker or Instant Pot


  • 2 Cups Cooked basmati rice In Pan (Fluffed fork)
  • 4-5 Green Chilis Chopped
  • 1 Sprig Curry Leaf
  • 1 Handful Cashews
  • 2-3 tbsp Vegetable or Canola Oil
  • 1 cup Peas Frozen Peas
  • 1 Sprinkle Hing / Asafetida
  • 2 Limes
  • 2 tsp Tumeric
  • 2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 pinch Jeera
  • 1 pinch Urad Daal
  • 1 pinch Channa Daal
  • 3 tsp Salt
  • Cilantro
  • Grated Coconut To Taste


  • Heat oil in pan
  • Test heat with mustard seeds, when they spit, add rest of them
  • Add jeera, urad daal, and channa daal
  • Add hing and cashews and stir together
  • When everything has been browned, add the peas, chilis, curry leaf and turmeric
  • Add one spoon of salt
  • Stir for one to two minutes
  • Add the cooked rice in batches and mix well.  Add another spoon of salt
  • When rice is yellow all over, add salt to taste
  • Mix in the cilantro
  • Use fork or lemon squeezer to squeeze two lemons in the rice and mix
  • Add in coconut to taste
  • Mix and serve warm


A typical puja day recipe. According to Sarayu’s mom, her uncle Narsim used to sing, “Roop tera, musranna…pyaar mera, chitranna…” which since learning of that story, now usually gets sung to the dish itself.
Pairs really well with Raita’s or Yogurt.
